When School Life Gets Heavy: Recognising Stress in Staff
This point in the school year can feel overwhelming. Productions, events, end-of-term prep, pupil energy levels peaking and staff energy often running low. It’s a time when even the brightest and most resilient colleagues can begin to show subtle signs of stress.
We don’t always see these changes in ourselves, but we often notice them in others. Being able to spot these early signs and respond with empathy can make a real difference.
Behaviour you may notice
- Avoiding interaction
- Keeping unusually quiet
- Irritability over small things
- Restlessness or agitation
- Changes in performance or focus
- Reduced motivation
Emotional indicators
- Worrying about things they wouldn’t normally worry about
- Low or flat mood
- Becoming teary or emotional unexpectedly
- A dip in confidence
Physical symptoms
- Looking noticeably tired
- Low energy
- Neglecting self-care
- Often feeling unwell
Signs through communication
- Negative self-talk
- Feeling distant or detached
- Short answers or withdrawn conversation
How you can support a colleague
Being present and supportive is more powerful than trying to fix the situation. Simple, practical actions can really help:
- Listen without judgement. Let them share worries and concerns without the need to make things better. Some people just need to get things off their chest.
- Avoid minimising their feelings. Phrases like “Surely it’s not that bad” can unintentionally dismiss their experience.
- Empathise. Saying something like “Under the circumstances it’s no wonder you feel how you do” shows understanding. Suggesting a lunchtime walk together or a coffee away from the desk can provide a welcome break.
- Show you care. Let them know you are there for them. Stress can feel very lonely.
- Check in regularly. A quick message, a chat in the corridor, or a friendly question over coffee shows ongoing support.
And finally, look after yourself too
We can only support others well when we are resourced ourselves. This is the season where self-kindness matters. Give yourself permission to slow, breathe and rest when you need it.
