Promoting Staff Wellbeing: Health Screening Day with Schools Advisory Service

In July 2024, Schools Advisory Service hosted a Health Screening Day, aimed at promoting physical and mental health awareness among employees. Organised and held by the school, a member of our NMC-registered nursing team provided confidential health checks to staff. Within these health checks they assess blood pressure, BMI, cholesterol and lifestyle risks to help identify concerns early and offer referrals for further support if needed.

The Challenge

One staff member had been experiencing ongoing symptoms but had not sought medical attention, attributing them to less serious causes. Like many people, she had become accustomed to her symptoms and was hesitant to seek help, risking delayed diagnosis and treatment.

Intervention

During her consultation with one of our nurses, she was advised to seek immediate medical attention based on a description of her symptoms. They expressed concern and emphasised the importance of getting checked by a healthcare professional.

The Outcome

Following this advice, the staff member visited her GP and was subsequently diagnosed with lung cancer. Early detection was critical, and the medical support she received promptly after the diagnosis has made a significant difference in her care journey. She has since shared that without the nurse’s guidance during the health screening she would have likely continued to ignore her symptoms.

A Life-Saving Moment: The Impact of Timely Workplace Health Support

This single interaction demonstrates the life-saving potential of workplace health initiatives. The staff member, along with her family, expressed deep gratitude for the nurse’s intervention. Her mother also extended heartfelt thanks, recognising the crucial role the advisor played in encouraging timely medical attention.

This case underscores the profound impact of accessible health advice in non-clinical settings. It reinforces the importance of workplace wellbeing services and the potential they have to identify serious health issues early—sometimes even saving lives.

SAS Customer

“I have been asked to email you by a member of staff who came to see you during our staff health and wellbeing day back in July 2024. She wanted to say THANK YOU as following your visit where you advised her to seek medical help, it was found that she had/has lung cancer. She said without your visit and prompt she would have continued to ignore her symptoms and that would have prevented her from getting the support she so desperately needed.

I promised I would pass on hers and her mum’s gratitude.”
