Introducing Mindfulness in the Classroom to Improve Children’s Wellbeing
Mindfulness in schools is becoming increasingly popular, and I firmly believe it should be included in the curriculum starting in early years. Mindfulness offers many wonderful benefits for children’s wellbeing as they grow and develop. Here are some key advantages:
Emotional Benefits of Mindfulness for Children
Mindfulness can help children stay calm and manage anxiety and stress by teaching them to practice staying present and in the moment. Breathing techniques can significantly reduce stress. Additionally, children learn to regulate their emotions by recognising them and not immediately reacting to them.
Enhancing Self-Awareness in Children
Practising mindfulness helps children become more aware of their feelings, thoughts, and sensations, allowing them to gain a deeper understanding of themselves.
Improved Cognitive Awareness through Mindfulness
Regular mindfulness practice improves children’s ability to concentrate in the classroom and increases their attention span, contributing to better academic performance.
Building Better Relationships with Mindfulness
Mindfulness teaches empathy and compassion, leading to improved relationships with others. Children learn to understand and respect the feelings of their peers.
Improved Communication Skills with Mindfulness
Mindfulness enhances children’s listening skills, enabling them to respond kindly and thoughtfully in conversations.
Boosting Confidence and Self-Esteem with Mindfulness
Mindfulness practice promotes self-awareness and self-acceptance. As children become more accepting of who they are, they build self-confidence and self-esteem.
