At SAS, the health and wellbeing services that we provide to school staff across the country is at the heart of everything we do. One of our many comprehensive services offered to school staff is chronic illness and cancer support. Working to support so many people affected each year, whether themselves or someone they love, we wanted to do something positive in an effort to raise money to support the vital research done by Cancer Research UK.
The team at SAS began our ‘cycle round the world challenge’ in September with a total team target of 24,000 miles to cycle. In an effort to encourage schools to take part, we announced that we would be donating 25p to Cancer Research UK for every 1 mile submitted by schools during the challenge. It was our pleasure to be joined in our challenge by around 50 schools and academies across the country. Our initial plan was for the challenge to take part during the month of September, but we extended the challenge until 4pm October 11. After conversations with schools taking part, many of them hoped to extend the challenge as their school community had been affected by cancer. Teachers and school staff were keen to continue to increase the final donation and raise awareness within their schools. The team here at SAS continued past September and have cycled along with schools to honour and support those affected by cancer.
We are so pleased to announce that we flew past our total 24,000 mile target and achieved a total of 29,886.54 miles. Total miles submitted by schools was 14,946.12 miles, which brings the SAS donation to Cancer Research UK to £3,736.53. The team have also been fundraising with family and friends and we are pleased to announce that we have raised a total of £4,924.53 for Cancer Research UK.
We have been grateful of the participation of these 50 schools. It has been such an honour to share in your personal experiences and to hear your stories, many of which included feedback about the fantastic support our wellbeing team have provided school staff during a challenging post diagnosis period of their lives. We hope that you have enjoyed the challenge as much as we have.
According to Cancer Research UK statistics, there are around 363,000 new cases of cancer every year.
